Canary Islands: two events towards sustainability

Two special events at Tenerife (29 Oct) and Fuerteventura (31 Oct) will highlight the opportunities for Canary Isles local governments and stakeholders to better monitor and enhance their achievements for sustainability. Staff members of Instituto Canario de Ciencias Marinas (ICCM, Agencia Canaria de Investigación, Innovación y Sociedad de la Información) and EUCC will present the Sustain project and the QualityCoast programme. Would you like to be a QualityCoast coordinator?

Local authorities prefer to communicate (and apply for the award) in their own language. Are you interested to work with them?

QualityCoast now supports Award applications in English, Dutch and Bulgarian. We would like to extend this with the help of QualityCoast regional and country coordinators. Are you interested to help making coastal towns and islands more sustainable? As a coordinator you will help select destinations that deserve to be encouraged or awarded. If useful, you will  make a special language version of the QualityCoast Application Pack, and will  translate information from application forms into English, for international evaluation. If you want, you can be hired as an expert for the assessment team, or be appointed in the QualityCoast international Jury. There will be limited room for financial compensation.

Launch of the QualityCoast Destinations Top 100 and Regions Top 10

At the QualityCoast Event of 18 May in Portugal, EUCC will present the selection of the hundred greenest, cleanest and most sustainable holiday destinations of the European coast: the QualityCoast Top 100. This list of award winning destinations is the result of an extensive research of more than 800 coastal and Island destinations and of a rigourous selection process. These destinations are to be considered the most attractive for visitors interested in nature and landscape, a clean environment, local identity and cultural heritage, and interested visitors can find detailed information on each of these aspects in the QualityCoast public website. They will be promoted to tourists through the QualityCoast campaign as well as through a number of tour operators, e.g. those connected to TUI, the Netherlands.

European coastal regions will also be challenged to strengthen their commitment to sustainable coastal tourism through the launch of the QualityCoast Regions Top 10, on the basis of the scores of the Top 100 destinations within their regions. Regions can improve your ranking in the list for next year by encouraging coastal destinations to become certified through the QualityCoast programme.

More information will be available as from 18 May in www.qualitycoast.info.

Press and media representatives interested to receive more information (under embargo till 18 May) are encouraged to contact secretariat@eucc.net.

QualityCoast at the Dutch Tourism Expo 2012

Utrecht (The Netherlands)

The QualityCoast stand at the Dutch Tourism Expo (Vakantiebeurs) was a big success. 126.279 people visited the Expo and many of them found their way to the QualityCoast stand!

Blikvanger

Our presence at the tourism expo was unanimously evaluated as excellent (score 9,5) by the team; most attractive elements included: the QualityCoast Quiz, the blikvanger (see picture) and the blue suitcases displaying local material. These suitcases gave a good impression of the attractiveness of those destinations that had provided us with material for display and dissemination.

In our QualityCoast Vakantiebeurs poll for the best destination suitcase the winners are:

  1. Gozo (Malta)
  2. Samothraki (Greece)
  3. Ierapetra (Greece).

    Display of Ierapetra

Other attractive suitcases were: the Azores (Portugal), Rab (Croatia) and Alonissos (Greece).
