OSPAR GATHERS VIEWS ON MEASURES TO REDUCE EMISSIONS OF MICROPLASTICS

OSPAR and the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment of the Netherlands held the joint workshop Closing the plastic value chain: measures for reducing microplastic emissions, on the 9th and 10th December 2015, in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

EUCC was invited to participate in the event, together with approximately 50 representatives from OSPAR Contracting Parties, other NGO’s, Industry and Research Organisations.

The workops intended to identify and prioritise measures that could be taken by OSPAR Contracting Parties and stakeholders to reduce emissions from microplastics from land-based sources, namely from synthetic clothing, cosmetics, abrasive cleaning agents, paints and tyres.

The results from the workshop will be taken into the consideration in the further development of a draft  OSPAR Background Document on Microplastics, which will outline the need for further actions or measures within OSPAR region.
