The agenda for sustainable oceans advanced over the last month during several global events:
– The UN Climate Summit 2014 considered actions to reduce emissions, strengthen climate resilience, and mobilize political will for a meaningful global agreement in 2015.
– The United Nations General Assembly adopted the proposal of the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals, paving the way for the possibility of a dedicated goal on oceans, seas and marine resources.
– The UN Conference on Small Island Developing States 2014 held in Apia, Samoa generated more than USD $1.9 billion in partnerships to boost the capacity of this group of countries to achieve sustainable development.
