International Coastal Atlas Network (ICAN) at UNESCO IOC – an Update

By Roger Longhorn, Member, ICAN Steering Committee and EUCC
Information Policy Advisor. Contact: for more information.

Following the announcement on 21 February that the International Coastal
Atlas Network (ICAN) has been accepted provisionally by the UNESCO
Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) as an official IODE
(International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange) Project, the
official Terms of Reference for the project are nearly complete and will
be agreed early in May. These will then be presented to the IOC at
IODE-XXII in March 2013 as a formal Project Recommendation, for official
endorsement. In the meantime, ICAN will proceed as a Pilot Project of
IODE. As ICAN includes some EUCC Members, we will circulate the final
Terms of Reference during the first week of May.
